What is it about new appliances that gets me so excited?? Is it the crisp, clean machine? The fun new buttons? Or maybe just the thrill of getting something delivered? Well, it’s probably all that plus more because we’ve had these babies for a week now and I’m still looking at them like they are my first born child. That’s right, people! Our new front loader washer and dryer are in the house!!
After our washing machine went caput a few weeks ago (and we spent two weeks hauling our laundry to the facilities in our complex for a wash, and lugging them back to dry), we trudged to Lowe’s on Memorial Day to check out a replacement. And I do not use the word ‘trudged’ lightly. Whenever Josh and I go shopping for a major purchase, it. takes. for. ever. We are those people you see hovering around the same department of the store when you walk in that are still there when you’re on the way out. Good lord, it took us over half an hour to pick out towels at IKEA!!
Back when we bought our original machines, we got the cheapest ones we could find. We were in no financial position to get anything more. This time around, I was in the mindset of wanting to buy something that would last for a really long time and not spending money on a placeholder. When I saw these, it was like that was meant to be. (Josh took some convincing but the discounts we rounded up with a little sleuthing got him there.
Now for the breakdown:
These Samsung machines originally retailed for $999.00 each which was waaaaaay out of our price range. They happened to be on sale that day at Lowe’s for $799.00 but that’s still a mighty large chunk of change. BUT Lowe’s has a price match guarantee. So, we jumped on our iPhones (which have already paid for themselves, by the way) and found out that the exact same models were selling for $584.10 at Sears. So, we saved a total of $429.80 just by pulling up a few comparisons in the store. Bam!
PLUS, the washing machine is an Energy Star rated appliance… and it just so happened to be the tax free weekend on everything Energy Star. Which means we also paid no tax on the washing machine; saving us another almost $50.00!
We did opt to get the warranty, mostly because we were coming off of a nasty stint of trying to repair our old washing machine ourselves. So with the machines, new hoses, and the 5 year warranty, we paid a total of $1473.00. We definitely splurged a little, but we plan on using these machines for the long haul AND they are energy efficient which will hopefully start racking up in energy and water bill savings!
So, yeah, please excuse me while I run off the do another load of laundry with unparalleled joy and the glowing smile that accompanies most appliance purchases!
What’s the best/steepest discount you’ve ever gotten on a major purchase? And also, please describe your new purchase happy dance in great detail! I want to know I’m not the only one here!
