Happy Monday friends! Welcome to the week before Christmas! One of the things I love most in the whole world is hanging out at home with a warm beverage when the temperature starts to drop. And without a doubt, my preferred toasty drink in December is homemade traditional wassail! It’s basically Christmas in a cup! The first time I ever tried this was Christmas a few years ago at my husband’s house. My sister-in-law Jennifer brewed this up and I was immediately hooked.
And, it is actually the perfect party drink! Jennifer makes it in a crock pot to keep it warm for hours and people can just grab a mug whenever they please. Our crock pot is teeny-tiny so we made ours over the stove. Either option would work perfect for your holiday get together.Homemade Traditional Wassail:
- 2 quarts apple cider
- 2 cups orange juice
- 1 1/2 cups pineapple juice
- 1/2 cup lemon juice
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon whole cloves
- 2-3 cinnamon sticks
- 1 orange
- Combine apple cider, orange juice, pineapple juice, lemon juice, &sugar into a large pot/crock pot.
- Stick cloves into the skin of your whole orange and place in pot.
- Add cinnamon sticks and let simmer on low-medium heat until heated through.
- Enjoy throughout the day.
My local grocery store happened to be out of cloves, so I just sliced my orange into thick slices and let those simmer in the pot. It was just as tasty, but the cloves definitely give it a big holiday flavor boost.
If you’re making it just for you (no judgement, that’s what we did!), you can pour any remaining wassail into a pitcher and store in the refrigerator. Just pour and heat whenever you desire a cup of Christmas cheer!
