a (super late) holiday hello

Well hello there! I mean, it’s only been 7 months since I’ve posted! Sheesh!

I know that Christmas is three days passed, but I really wanted to squeeze in a quick post of our holiday decorations this year. Even though it’s been ridiculously busy around 816, we still managed to get some festive touches up before Christmas passed us by.

I decided to skip the specific color scheme this year and just go crazy with bright, traditional, warm colors. I snagged some vintage style LED lights on sale last year and they really made our tree glow.

To make our Christmas card collection look extra festive I filled our wire wreath from CB2 with some rose gold ornament garlands (also from CB2). And in the hallway, I swapped our our bright flowers with winter berries and a snow-fall inspired garland above.

This year I tried to bring in more holiday elements throughout the apartment instead of just the tree and card wreath. It’s always more fun to see touches of Christmas everywhere you look.

I hope you all had an amazing holiday. We’ll talk again soon!

yum | homemade chocolate-dipped marshmallows

I can willingly admit (with only a little bit of shame) that Peeps are one of my favorite spring time treats. I just can’t stay away from those sugar coated bunnies and chicks. But, this year I decided to resist temptation by making my own Spring Time Marshmallow Treats!

yum | homemade chocolate-dipped marshmallowsNow, you probably all know about my slight obsession with homemade marshmallows. I love to break my recipes for Candy Cane or Bourbon Brown Sugar for the colder months but today’s variation is perfect for a sweet Spring time treat or as a yummy addition to your Easter baskets.

Homemade Marshmallows:

  • 4 envelopes unflavored gelatin
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 1/4 cup light corn syrup
  • 1 1/2 c. water (divided in half)
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • Powdered sugar
  • Semi-sweet and white chocolate
  • Sprinkles

  1. Spray a 9×13 pan liberally with non-stick spray, line with parchment paper, then spray again. Don’t skimp on the spray!
  2. Pour 3/4 cup water into mixing bowl and sprinkle in gelatin. Let sit for at least 5 minutes.
  3. Combine sugar, syrup, salt, and the remaining 3/4 cup water into a medium sized pot.
  4. Boil and stir to dissolve sugar. Without stirring any further, heat to 238F (use candy thermometer). When it’s ready, it will start to look bubbly and foamy on top.
  5. Pour done syrup slowly into mixing bowl. Work up to a high mixing speed and continue to beat for about 12 minutes until stiff, fluffy, and white.. I usually like to put a towel over my mixer to contain the steam and any potential splatter while I’m increasing speed.
  6. Add vanilla. Mix 1 more minute.
  7. Spread into prepared pan and let sit for 3 hours uncovered.
  8. When done setting, spread top with powdered sugar and then release onto a clean surface covered in more powdered sugar. Cut into squares with a sharp knife and dip all sides into powdered sugar.
  9. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper
  10. Melt chocolate and prepare sprinkles in separate bowls.
  11. Carefully dip marshmallows into chocolate, then sprinkles, and place on cookie sheets to dry.

Okay, tell me the truth! Do you like peeps or not? Every person I’ve ever asked seems to have a very strong opinion either way. If you’re not a fan, can we still be friends??

Storing Relationship Mementos

Today is a special day. Today, is my husband’s 25th birthday. Sure, it’s a Tuesday, so it’s probably going to be a little lame, but I do want to take a minute on the blog today to say Happy Birthday to a guy I’m pretty darn attached to.

And instead of doing the normal, rambling mushy post that would probably make most readers want to run away screaming, I thought I’d double team this day and give you some awesome organizing information at the same time!

I’m sure all of us have a box somewhere full of relationship mementos. You know, pictures, love notes, movie ticket stubs. Admit that you have one! Well, up until now, I’ve been keeping all those memories in a box shoved deep into a closet. They almost never cross my mind, unless I’m rummaging through said closet, in which case I’m probably not in a romantic mood.

So, the other day, I took that box out, sorted through the contents and decided to give all these special little items a nice space to hang out. Here’s how I’m storing my relationship mementos!  Get Organized | Storing Relationship Mementos | twolivecolorfully.comI picked up this adorable little spotted box at Target, brought it home, and diligently sorted through every scrap of paper I’d saved from our high school days. Most of it went into an automatic “keep” pile. Notes and songs and pictures; they all make me smile equally as big as on the day I received them. But I won’t be shy about saying that I did not keep everything.

Why on earth do I need to keep a Bridge to Terabithia movie ticket? It wasn’t even that great of a movie. And I didn’t look all that great in those prom pictures anyways. Why do I need five copies?

Get Organized | Storing Relationship Mementos | twolivecolorfully.comWhen sorting through your own collection, try to consciously decide what has a meaningful memory attached and what doesn’t. Keeping every scrap of paper won’t make the whole of your mementos more special. If anything, it’ll just clutter up the good stuff.

Get Organized | Storing Relationship Mementos | twolivecolorfully.comI didn’t do anything too crazy inside the box, just gently laid everything inside where it can easily be accessed. And then I put that box right on our book shelf! No more hiding these little treasures in the depths of a closet. It might seem a little silly, but even just seeing the box out in our home gives me a little boost of lovey-dovey-ness.

And, because, I just couldn’t possibly talk about all this without sharing at least one silly artifact from our relationship. I present you with this:

Get Organized | Storing Relationship Mementos | twolivecolorfully.comOh yeah. Drink this in. This was back in the day when cutting up and diying t-shirts was all the rage. I made this little beauty for Josh’s high school Jazz band concert where, you guessed it, he was the bass player. Yup, I was pretty smitten. Also, I’m pretty sure that awful selfie went up on my Myspace page! Haha!

Happy Birthday Honey!

How do you store your special little relationship tokens? I’d love to know!

I really do love the sentiment behind Valentine’s Day and I love all the cute decorations that come with it. By why do pinks and reds and lovely hearts have to disappear in March? our colorful life | cheer coach josh

Cheer Coach Josh is done for the year! Last night was the official end of Josh’s first cheer season. He was approached about coaching the freshman squad kind of out of the blue last fall, but he’s had a blast doing it all year. To celebrate the girls achievements and have some fun, Josh wanted to throw a little party in his classroom and asked me to help out with all the details. Of course I said yes, because I’m really into parties, but also, the man works non-stop. He’s up early in the morning and often doesn’t get home until 7:00 or later. So, I really wanted to help make this party special not just for the girls, but also for my hardworking husband.

our colorful life | cheer coach joshWe brought in sandwiches and fruit for dinner and I whipped up some fantastically girly cupcakes for dessert. Seriously, I always get requests for my Chocolate Oreo Cupcakes. They are always the first to go. But, I was equally excited about the Vanilla/Vanilla combo this time, because they got purple icing and some edible glitter! Man, do those girls love glitter!

I snagged those polka dot straws and IZZE Sparkling Blackberry sodas on sale at Target. These were a big hit! The girls loved sipping yummy soda from cute straws. Who wouldn’t right?our colorful life | cheer coach joshI didn’t do much in way of decorations, but I did make a lot more of these ruffled crepe paper garlands in purple and black. They got strung up all the way around the room and Josh’s white board, and at the end of the party, I let the girls take them home.

I mixed up a party playlist featuring a fun mix some girl power tunes, current pop, and a sprinkling of 90’s sporting event songs (y’all ready for this?). After eating and chatting, Josh handed out cute little awards for each girl, they all made a few speeches, and then we took lots of pictures.

It was a lot of fun. These girls are all super goofy. Plus, you can just see from the pictures above that they love their coach! It makes me so happy that Josh has a group of students he can count on to work hard and be respectful; a luxury he is not afforded in his everyday classes.

But have no fear! Because Josh is taking over Freshman AND JV next year, so you haven’t heard the last of Cheer Coach Josh!
